On October 28, 2015, Dr. Charles Elachi announced his plans to retire in front of a packed crowd during an all-hands meeting at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Elachi's career at JPL spans 45 years, the past 15 years as its director. He will retire on June 30, 2016.
